A child protection charity is calling for smacking to be banned in the Channel Islands.

The NSPCC says it wants the controversial act to be made illegal following the Scottish government's plan to ban the physical punishment of children.

In Guernsey, it is an offence to assault a child and any prosecution is dependent on specific circumstances of the case. A criminal investigation could be launched if there are visible marks or bruises.

In Jersey, physical punishment of a child is currently viewed as a criminal offence but under Article 79 of the Children Law 2002, parents, relatives or guardians can defend their actions as reasonable provided no more than a hand is used.

The States of Jersey says a review will happen as soon as the new Children's Commissioner is appointed.
