Channel Island interests 'to be taken into account' during Brexit negotiations

The islands' governments say they are pleased their interests will be taken into account during Brexit negotiations over trade.

It follows the release of the UK's Position Paper which outlines its aims for the availability of goods after it leaves the EU.

The paper says the UK recognises that Crown Dependencies are constitutionally separate but that it "will fully engage with their respective governments to ensure their priorities on these issues are taken into account".

Jersey's government has welcomed this, saying that maintaining access to EU markets is a key aim for the island, particularly for agriculture and fisheries products.

Guernsey's President of the Policy and Resources Committee, Gavin St Pier tweeted a link to the document, which stresses the islands' 'distinct interests'.
