Around 4,000 people over the age of 65 in Jersey are living alone, according to figures from Age Concern Jersey.

The charity predicts around 400 islanders are "chronically lonely".

It comes as UK-based charity, The Silver Line, has revealed a rise in calls from lonely people this summer, while family and friends are away on holiday.

A recent survey from Age UK found that 10% of over 65's consider themselves to be "chronically lonely", 200,000 of which haven't had conversations with family or friends for a month or longer.

Locally, charities say island living can intensify the problem.
