Football: Guernsey men’s earn point against Åland
Guernsey’s men’s footballers fought back against Åland to grab a point in their first group match at the 2017 Island Games in Gotland.
Åland took the lead through a cross, turned shot from Fredrik Appel which beat games debutant Leroi Riley early in the game.
Steve Sharman’s young team, which included a central midfield pairing with a combined age of 34, of Tom Dodds and Charlton Gauvain, had lots of chances to score with Ross Allen hitting the bar and Matt Loaring hitting the upright.
Eventually Åland succumbed to the Guernsey pressure and Ross Allen scored a volley from Jacob Fallaize’s knock down to set up a tense finale.
The final action of the game saw substitute Ryan Zico-Black sent off for a second yellow card after an alleged elbow on an Åland player.
