Guernsey athlete Chalmers earns first GB call-up

Chalmers will go straight from Lille to Gotland to represent Guernsey in the NatWest Island Games.

Guernsey 400m runner Cameron Chalmers will don his first senior Great Britain vest after being selected for the 2017 European Athletics Team Championships.

He is one of 14 debutants in a 56-strong team which will travel to Lille in France later this month aiming to better GB’s fifth-placed result in Russia two years ago.

It takes place over the first weekend of the NatWest Island Games in Gotland, where Chalmers will try to retain 400m gold, and just a week after he goes in the England Athletics U23 Championships.

The Bath athlete, 20, took smashed his personal best last month with a new island record time of 45.71 to take the British Universities title.

He will race in the 4x400m relay at the European Team event, which sees twelve nations, including Germany, Italy, and hosts France, compete in a points-based competition.
