Charging disabled islanders for 'free' bus pass is 'arguably discriminatory'

A Jersey politician has described plans to charge disabled islanders £15 to apply for a 'free' bus pass as 'arguably discriminatory'.

Deputy Montfort Tadier is asking the States to drop the fee which is designed to cover administration costs.

Alternatively, he argues, the cost should be covered from within departmental budgets.

The £15 fee is for disabled islanders to apply for the pass, with successful applicants being able to travel on buses without paying from the 1st of March.

But Deputy Tadier says that since the OAP pass does not include such a charge, the plans are inconsistent.
