Changes proposed to encourage Airbnb style renting in Jersey

Jersey's Economic Development Minister is looking to replace the island's tourism laws and encourage Airbnb style home renting.

Senator Lyndon Farnham says the changes to the 69-year-old legislation will "strip away red tape".

One of the changes proposed is to provide for "limited casual home rental", something facilitated by sites like Airbnb.

A consultation paper has been created with five other aims:

  • Improve conditions for industry growth.

  • Benefit consumers and businesses.

  • Gather enough data for marketing and policy.

  • Maintain public safety.

  • Lower the cost of regulation.

Senator Farnham said: "I am proposing a new law that will strip away some unnecessary red tape and give the industry greater scope to respond to the demands of the market.

I also intend to clarify the rules around Airbnb-style short term letting."

Tourism bosses are also supporting the changes.
