The States of Jersey will continue to subsidise TV licence's for the over 75s.

The news will come as a relief to many, as it was set to be scrapped completely earlier this year.

The States have confirmed it will now be means tested.

From 2018, the BBC will contribute £270,000 to the licence fee.

The news comes as part of a range of new arrangements finalised on behalfof the Island with the BBC.

The BBC has committed to:

  • treat all Crown Dependencies fairly

  • continue to provide Jersey with radio and television services

  • contribute the full cost of Jersey’s means-tested TV licence concession for people over the age of 75 in 2020/21

Senator Ozouf says the new agreement is an "excellent outcome".

The current arrangements with the BBC expire on 31 December 2016.
