Fresh calls to implement Jersey States reform referendum results

There are fresh calls to implement the results of the Jersey 2013 referendum on States reform, which would reduce the number of politicians in the island.

Deputy Andrew Lewis has lodged a proposition, with the hope the current Assembly may think differently about the referendum result.

If passed it would see a reduction in the number of States members and create six large constituencies, which Deputy Lewis claims will bring ‘greater equality to the power of each islander’s vote.’

The States Assembly would be made up of 44 politicians - 32 Senators and 12 Constables.

Deputy Lewis says the restructure would save the government nearly £250,000 a year.

Deputy Lewis also claims that failing to acknowledge the outcome of the referendum may have contributed to voter apathy and be a factor in a low voter turn-out in Jersey elections.
