Guernsey education decision could come in November

The Grammar School could be lost is States approve old proposals

The future of Guernsey's education system could finally be decided as early as this November.

The Education Committee has announced they are putting together a policy letter and want a decision made 'as soon as possible'.

They will be asking the States to rescind or endorse proposals voted though by the previous government to:

  • Scrap the 11+ selection

  • Lose the Grammar School

  • Introduce a single school system over four existing school sites

Deputy Paul Le Pelley, head of the Education Committee, admitted on Wednesday that the politicians can't agree on the best future for the system.

But, in a new statement he says ‘once the direction has been determined, all members of the Committee have resolved to implement the policy...without further delay'.

They are aiming to bring the debate to the States on 2nd November.

The move is being welcomed by head of Policy and Resources, Deputy Gavin St Pier, who says he 'wholeheartedly endorses' the debate happening 'as soon as possible'.
