Islander raises awareness of rare heart condition

A man from Jersey who nearly died from a rare heart condition is helping to raise awareness to save lives.

Keith Berry had Aortic Dissection, where blood escapes from the main artery that carries blood away from the heart.

Today, on Aortic Dissection Awareness Day, he will be just off the High Street - outside Jack Wills - in St Helier, giving out information about the symptoms and where you can get help from 9am - 4pm.

Only two people in Jersey are known to have the problem, but doctors say many more could have the ticking time bomb without realising it.

Symptoms are very similar to other heart problems and include shortness of breath and dizziness.

Keith, 56, went to the doctor suffering from what he thought was "trapped wind" last February, but was rushed into surgery. Doctors told him if nothing was done, he probably had two days to live.
