Around 100 people attend first by-election hustings

Around 100 people turned out for the hustings at St Saviour Parish Hall

Islanders in Jersey got their first chance to quiz candidates competing for a vacant Senatorial seat last night.

Around 100 people turned out for the hustings at St Saviour Parish Hall - which is the first of 12 gatherings.

Issues that were raised included concerns about cuts to public services, immigration and Brexit.

The by-election is being held in September, after the resignation of former Senator Zoe Cameron last month.

A total of 11 candidates took their chance to convince voters why they should be elected.

They are:

  • Restaurateur, Alvin Aaron

  • Political campaigner, Mike Dun

  • Former politician and Journalist, Guy De Faye

  • Former Senator, Sarah Ferguson

  • Former Deputy, Nick Le Cornu

  • Entertainer, Stevie Ocean

  • Equality campaigner and lawyer, Christian May

  • Current Deputy, Sam Mezec

  • Businesswoman, Mary O'Keeffe Burgher

  • President of the Honorary Police and Sports Council Chairman, Hugh Raymond

  • Ex-Deputy and former Head of the Environment Department, John Young
