Almost 30 years after he fell into a gorilla pit at Durrell Wildlife Park in Jersey, Levan Merritt has spoken to ITV News about the gorilla shot dead in America.

He was just four-years-old when he fell into the enclosure, where Jambo the silverback stood over him to protect him.

On Saturday a young boy, also four-years-old, crawled into an enclosure at Cincinnati zoo and was dragged around by his ankles by Harambe the Western lowland.

The gorilla was shot and killed by zoo keepers and the boy rescued.

Levan Merritt told ITV News 'it's a shame the gorilla had to be put down'.
