A lot of rain and a little controversy in day one of WCL5 leaves Guernsey victorious and Jersey facing Oman rematch
The opening day of the WCL5 was hampered by heavy rain in the morning and a little controversy in the evening.
The stand out game of the day ended in the biggest controversy as Jersey v Oman was called off and rescheduled for Monday despite Jersey seemingly heading for victory.
Guernsey beat Vanuatu in a similar set of circumstances, the Sarnians up by 5 runs on Duckworth-Lewis as the game was called off for rain after 21 overs.
And Nigeria beat Tanzania by four wickets behind Ademola Onekoyi's unbeaten 68 chasing 116 in 28 overs.
Oman's Coach Dulaap Mendis admitted that his team got a 'narrow escape' after Jersey v Oman was called off because of rain with Jersey 49-1 after 8.5 overs and chasing 132-9.
Because of the late start the match was limited to 23 overs and Jersey's bowlers did well to disrupt Oman's rhythm. Rhys Palmer claimed three wickets on his WCL debut and helped keep Oman to 114-9 after 20.
Jersey got off to a confident bating start too with Gough and Jenner playing well, by the time the game was called off Jersey were 49-1 in the 9th over.
They will now need to start the game from scratch on Monday's reserve day but Jersey's captain Peter Gough says his team can take a lot from the experience:
Guernsey for their part also suffered a late start at FB Fields because of the rain, their match against Vanuatu was to be limited to 26 overs.
They managed to keep Vanuatu to 127-6 but with the rain returning with Guernsey bating play had to be stopped after 21 overs, Guernsey at this point were on 105-6, five runs better than Vanuatu.
Matthew Stokes scored the most runs for Guernsey with 34 and took 2 for 23 in the field. Vanuatu's captain Andrew Mansale lead his team by example taking an impressive 4 for 19 as his team piled on the pressure on Guernsey, leaving them 81 for 6 in the 16th over.
A solid performance by Ben Ferbrache and Thomas Kirk however was enough to steady Guernsey and leave them just ahead by the time play was called off.
Vanuatu players were desperate to get back out and finish the innings but with a constant drizzle coming down the umpires decided to stop the game, giving Guernsey their first win.
Vanuatu's captain and man on the match, Andrew Mansale, was visibly disappointed but proud of his team's performance and their spirit:
In the third game of the day Nigeria beat Tanzania in a reduced 28 overs game. They were propelled by the performance of their opener, Ademola Onikoyi, who finished on 68 unbeaten.
Tanzania bated first but only managed 115 for 8, Nigeria reaching 116 with 19 balls to spare.
Today Jersey face Vanuatu at Grainville; Guernsey play Tanzania at Farmers Field and Nigeria take on Oman at FB Fields.
