Guernsey boxing trio mix it up with the best in England

Not much has changed between the walls of Guernsey's amalgamated boxing club since it's founding in 1935.

According to the coaches there, it's one of those clubs that just feels like a 'real boxing club'; no fancy machinery, only sweat and blood.

And the old formula seems to be working, there's a growing appetite on the island to learn the secrets behind the sweet science; so much so that the gym struggles with it's limited floor space.

This year the club is putting three of its best boxers into the Elite ABA Senior Championships, the most prestigious amateur contest in the UK.

Our sports reporter Chris Cunningham went to meet them:

First up is James Woolnough, with 70 fights under his belt he's a well known figure on the island's boxing scene. He's also the most experienced of the bunch when it comes to the ABAs, having reached the quarter finals a couple of years ago where he lost to the eventual winner.

Something he fully intends to put right this year at Middleweight:

Billy Le Poullain is an exciting young Welterweight with a 'hands down' style to draw his opponents in.But it's not all for show he's proved he's got a good deal of power in his hands, stopping 4 of his last 7 opponents.

And finally Chris Summer, the youngest and lightest of the trio certainly looks like a young man with bright prospects.

He may be the quietest of the bunch but don't let it deceive you, he lets his fists do the talking.

In fact just last night Summer took his first step down the road to a national title by qualifying for the Western Counties finals this weekend.

Woolnough and Le Poullain will have to wait until tonight to fight for their place in the final.
