Children use puppet power to learn sign language

A child uses a puppet to sign

A nursery school is teaching youngsters sign language thanks to puppets donated by a local charity.

The Jersey Childcare Trust persuaded a large local finance firm to donate the money to La Petite Ecole nursery rather than doing a 'Secret Santa' at their Christmas party.

A teacher uses the puppet to demonstrate the signs and then the children can copy it easily. They can also use the puppet to practice.

The nursery say signing is also good for learning to develop language skills because it helps them visualise words.

The charity are hoping the idea they hope will take off and other local companies will donate money in a similar way.

Fiona Vacher, Director of Jersey Childcare Trust, says the scheme includes all children and helps those that struggle with communication.

Songs are used as part of the teaching and you can watch one below.
