St Helier Constable wants People's Park to be saved

The Constable of St Helier is fighting for the green space at People's Park to be left alone from development.

It's one of the potential sites for the new hospital. Constable Simon Crowcroft has launched a proposition to the States asking for People's Park to be removed from the list of potential sites.

Simon Crowcroft says the issue is causing 'a great deal of concern' to islanders and he's received many letters from parishioners about the topic.

The Constable has outlined a number of reasons he believes the hospital should be build on a different location.

  • Constable Crowcroft has concerns the search for a new hospital site isn't being dealt with as openly and transparently as it should be.

  • He says People's Park is a valuable public space used to host community events such as the Portuguese Food Festival, attracting tens of thousands of visitors.

  • There's an expectation some of the land at the Waterfront reclamation site should be used as community open space.

  • The present hospital site isn't as well positioned to be turned into a public space, claims Crowcroft, because the site is bordered with a busy road and tall buildings.

  • An extension to the Millennium Town Park is rumoured to be part of a potential compensation package for the loss of green space at People's Park, the Constable argues that town needs both People's Park and an extension to the Millennium Park.

In concluding, the Constable outlines how important People's Park is and why it should be saved.
