Sark celebrates Liberation today
Islanders in Sark are gearing up to celebrate 70 years of freedom from German rule.
Today, May 10th, marks the anniversary of the arrival of liberating forces in 1945.
During 1940-1945, the Channel Islands were the only British soil occupied by German troops. Sark celebrate their Liberation Day a day later than Guernsey and Jersey, as it took the Allied soldiers an extra day to reach the island.
Among the 2015 celebrations include the official unveiling of a granite plaque by Mrs Nellie Le Feuvre, the last remaining deportee living on Sark, to commemorate those who were deported by the Germans to work camps in Eastern Europe.
Here's a rundown of the day's events:
10.00 – Harbour Hill Transport to commence 15-minute interval runs to and from top of hill. (also collecting passengers from the scheduled boats)
11.15 – Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to overfly Creux Harbour.
11.20 – United Service. All welcome.
12.00 – Unveiling of a Plaque to the Sark Deportees of WWII – unveiling by Mrs Nellie Le Feuvre and Mr Dudley Bradley.
12.30 – Food & Drink Outlets open.
