The facts: Being a bone marrow donor

The Anthony Nolan Trust are encouraging young islanders to sign up to be bone marrow donors.

Young men are in particular need, as they produce more stem cells than women and are six times more likely to donate. But, they make up just 15% of the register.

That's something the charity want to change, giving the 37,000 patients on the waiting list a better chance of survival.

Who can join the register?

  • People between 16 and 30 years old

  • People in good health

  • People over over 7st 12lbs (50kg)

  • People who have a body mass index (BMI) lower than 40

It costs £100 to add each donor to the register, so the charity must ensure the people they are recruiting are appropriate.
