Police have confirmed that a woman who died in Wolverhampton this afternoon was 29 years old.

She was walking past Starbucks in the pedestrianised area of Dudley Street just before midday when wooden debris from a nearby building, described by an eyewitness as the size of a coffee-table, struck her.

Emergency services said nothing could be done to save her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now working alongside the council to establish how it happened.

The area remains cordoned off while investigations are ongoing. The family of the victim have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
