Six people were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act this morning (12 December).

Four men from Derby age 22, 27, 35 and 36, a 27-year-old man from Burton on Trent and a 32-year-old woman from London have all been arrested on suspicion of engaging in the Preparation of an Act of Terrorism, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team was called in as a precautionary measure to the Normanton area of Derby. No houses have been evacuated.

In a statement, North East Counter Terrorism Unit said:

We thank the local public for their continued understanding in relation to the ongoing police activity.

All six arrests this morning were carried out under terrorism legislation, meaning officers have an initial 48 hours to charge, release or apply for a warrant of further detention. The arrests are linked to International related terrorism.

Derby’s chief officer has offered his thanks to people in the city for their messages of support in the wake of terrorism-related arrests.

Chief Superintendent Jack Atwal said:

People living and working in Normanton will have seen a large police presence in the area today.

We appreciate that this may have caused concern among residents and we are deploying Safer Neighbourhood officers to the area to speak to people in the community about their fears.
