Children's heart surgery will no longer be carried out at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital after the service has been cut by NHS England.
A review of children's heart surgery has found that Birmingham children's hospital was only one of two centres in the country meeting most or all of national standards. The hospital now faces an increase in patient numbers as NHS England looks to close the heart surgery at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital. It was identified as one of those centres not meeting standards.
In a statement, Sarah-Jane Marsh, Chief Executive at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, said:
Birmingham Children’s Hospital is pleased the CHD review recognises the excellence of our congenital heart disease service, which treat hundreds of children each year from the region and beyond.
In light of the review published today (8 July) we are awaiting further guidance from NHS England regarding future plans.
Offering the best possible care and support to children and young people is the driving force behind everything that we do. This will continue whilst working closely in partnership with colleagues at University Hospitals of Leicester.
A special meeting on the future of the children's heart centre at Glenfield Hospital will be held tonight.
The number of hospitals in England allowed to perform child heart surgery is to be cut following an NHS review to improve standards.
