Demolition of the old Central Library in Birmingham is due to begin later today.

Developers are clearing the site as part of a redevelopment of Paradise square, with motorists warned to expect further diversions and road closures.

It's part of a £500 million scheme to regenerate the area with two new office blocks and a redevelopment of Chamberlain Square.

“The visible transformation of Paradise has now begun in earnest. The removal of the exterior of the old library is another milestone for the scheme and for the city itself."

– Rob Groves, Senior Projects Director of Argent,
  • Road closures

While work to clear the site takes place, the walkway through the old Paradise Forum has been closed together with a large part of Chamberlain Square.

Pedestrians and cyclists have now been re-routed through Fletchers Walk.
