Opening hours at Birmingham's new library will be cut by almost half to save money, the city council has confirmed.

Plans to reduce staff at the £189 million library by nearly 50 per cent are also under consideration.

The proposals are in the new budget, which proposes a Council Tax increase of about two per cent for 2015/16. The document is designed to allow the authority to make savings of £113 million.

"The council has reached the end of local government as we know it”.
