The Glapton Academy in Clifton says an increase of traffic on the road outside the school due to tram works means that having the gates open would cause a risk to children.
One parent told ITV News Central it is "crazy" that they have been banned from going to their children's sports day over safety concerns.
Another parent said she thinks it is better to be safe than sorry.
