'Ensuring child safety is the key thing' says school

The Glapton Academy in Clifton in Nottingham, says that an increase of traffic on the road outside the school because of tram-works means that having the gates open during sports day would cause a risk to children. As a result, they say parents will not be invited this year.

Parents of children at the primary school have told ITV News Central it is 'crazy' that they have been banned from going to the event over concerns about safety.

But, head-teacher, Ruth Ellis, said:

"We will have our gate shut and all of our staff will be out and we will know all of the adults on site and we will be able to ensure that all the children are safe. I think that is the key thing...

...We have major road-works and tram-works. It will be an event that is manned by our staff with all the gates shut."
