Many parents dropping their boys off at the school, expressed shock and disappointment at the decision. There was no consultation with parents ahead of the decision and some said they had chosen Nottingham High specifically because it was boys only.
Research into the merits of single-sex education appears to be inconclusive. A study carried out in 2006 found no evidence that pupils in single-gender schools achieve better than in co-educational ones.
