Authorities regain control of Birmingham prison

A former Birmingham Prison inmate has revealed how he died three times after taking illegal drugs behind bars.

The call for action follows last week's riot at HMP Birmingham, which saw hundreds of inmates wreak havoc in the jail.

Liz Truss says the issues gripping the country's prisons could last for months but she is confident problems can be resolved.

A spate of prison riots erupted after warnings were raised repeatedly about low staffing levels across the estate, according to a watchdog.

Concerns have been raised about security at Hull Prison after the transfer of inmates from the troubled Birmingham Prison.

Some 240 prisoners are being moved following the 12-hour disturbance that spread across four wings of the privately-run prison.

Reinforcements wearing riot gear have entered the prison which has been locked down today. Prisoners got hold of keys to residential areas.
