Major fire at University of Nottingham

Investigations are underway to establish how a major fire completely destroyed a building at the University of Nottingham.

The fire ripped through the building on the University's jubilee campus on Friday night.

The £20 million chemistry lab, part funded by the pharmaceutical giant Glaxo Smith Kline, was still under construction.

Dr Paul Greatrix Registrar, University of Nottingham, says the laboratory would have been 'world leading'.

The university also said it would be rebuilt.

Shocking pictures show the extent of damage caused by a blaze which ripped through the multi-million pound new chemistry building at the University of Nottingham's Jubilee Campus.

The impressive building was hit by fire on Friday evening. An investigation was launched today to try to determine what caused the blaze.

It was still under construction, having been funded by a £12 million grant from pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline.

Investigators from Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue have spent the morning examining the scene of the fire on the Jubilee Campus.

Around 60 firefighters were on the scene to tackle the flames at the peak of the blaze.

In a statement the University of Nottingham have released a statement about the fire that they say "completely destroyed" their new GlazoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry which was under construction.

The University's Registrar praised staff and the fire service.

Firefighters battling a 'major' blaze at the University of Nottingham have managed to contain the fire but they are still working to put it out completely, according to an incident commander at the scene.

In a video posted on the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service's Facebook page, Group Manager Joanne Wooler-Ward said: "We're on a firefighting operation, so to extinguish the fire and manage any other risks."

She added that they are not in a position to say what started the fire but police and specialist fire investigation officers would be examining the site as soon as possible.

She said: "There is a lot of damage to the building.... It was a fully developed fire and just credit to those that really did pull out all the stops to prevent this fire spreading to other areas."

The university's website describes the lab as being carbon neutral, built with natural materials, powered by renewable energy and incorporating "state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories".

It is billed to be a "centre for excellence", with the building work backed by a £12 million grant from pharmaceutical giant GSK.
