East Midlands Airport has issued a statement after declaring the site fully operational following a crash involving a cargo plane on the runway this morning.

It says the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has now conducted a full investigation after the plane's landing gear failed.

All flights have been suspended today, causing widespread disruption.

An spokesperson for the airport said:

“Following a suspension of flights earlier today due to an issue with a cargo flight after landing, East Midlands Airport is now fully operational.

"We would like to thank all our passengers for their patience throughout today and offer apologies for the inconvenience caused.

As we return to normal operations, it is possible that there may be some changes to the flight schedule and we would encourage passengers to contact their airline and check our website for the latest information on their travel."

Update on airport closure expected in next few hours

Bosses at East Midlands Airport have told ITV News Central they hope to be able to update passengers on when the airport will reopen in the next few hours.

The runway in Castle Donington has been shut for more than twelve hours after part of the landing gear of a cargo plane failed.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737 Freighter. The only people on board were two flight crew, and there were no injuries.

The Irish Air Accident Investigation Unit and UK Air Accident Investigation Branch have carried out an investigation at the scene and the plane is now in the process being removed.
