Memorial for Kegworth air disaster victims 25 years on

An 87-year-old Kegworth air crash survivor has described the moments after the crash in 1989.

Alan Johnston was on the flight, and says his first thought was to check the people sat around him were alright.

Of the 126 on board British Midland Flight BD092, 47 were killed, and 74 other were injured, many of them seriously.

A service has taken place in the village of Kegworth, to remember the 47 people who died in the air crash that happened on the nearby M1 motorway, 25 years ago today.

This morning wreaths were laid at a memorial stone in Kegworth Cemetrery to remember those who died in the Kegworth air disaster 25 years go.

Lesley Pendleton, Kegworth Parish Council said: "Those that lived in the village at the time, a lot of whom were involved in the rescue operation, obviously those have memories of the time.

"Events like today will bring that back to them. Obviously if there's a funny noise on an aircraft when it's coming into land, you often think there's something wrong with that and then you hear it land and the reverse thrust and you know it's down safely.

"It's always there in the back of your mind."

Former Central News East reporter Anna Soubry, who is now the Conservative MP for Broxtowe, has described her feelings at seeing the wreckage of the British Midland plane, which crashed on the approach to East Midlands Airport 25 years ago today.

She was one of the first to report on the disaster near Kegworth on January 8 1989. She said it was a 'peculiar feeling', when she stopped to think how the plane had come to rest on the embankment of the M1.

Prayers have been said for the victims and their families of the Kegworth air crash at St Andrew's church this morning.

Jez Noon was working as a firefighter on the night Flight BD092 crashed into the embankment of the M1, while it attempted to make an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport.

Here he describes the first moment he entered the Boeing 737's shattered fuselage to rescue survivors, and the scene of devastation which met him when he went inside.

Retired ATV cameraman Gary Hughes was the first TV crew at the scene of the Kegworth air disaster on January 8 1989.

He said it was quiet, with just the noise of ambulances on the northbound carriageway of the M1 next to where the plane had crash landed on the embankment.

He also describes how organised the rescue effort was, despite the scenes of devastation around him.

Today marks 25 years since 47 people died when a British Midland Boeing 737 crashed on the embankment of the M1 near Kegworth in Leicestershire.

Flight BD 092 took off from Heathrow at 7:52pm on January 8 1989 bound for Belfast, but was diverted to East Midlands Airport after the pilot reported engine trouble.
