Incident closes Burton A & E

Following the closure of the Accident and Emergency department at Queen’s Hospital, Burton, today we can confirm that the powder has now been identified as an inert substance which poses no threat to health.

Accident and Emergency at Queen’s Hospital will be re-opened to patients over the course of the next hour.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our patients and thank them for bearing with us.

We would like to note that A & E is the only department that has been closed. All our other clinics and services are open and functioning as normal, and patients planning to attend our hospitals for anything other than an emergency should still come as planned.

Once we have confirmed that there is no risk to our patients, we will re-open the A & E department. In the meantime, we would ask our patients to kindly bear with us and attend Derby Hospitals, or other hospital local hospitals if they need emergency treatment.

We can confirm that we are dealing with a major incident at the A & E Department on the Queen’s Hospital site, Burton on Trent.

We can confirm that a number of people came into contact with an unidentified powder in their workplace and came to our A & E for treatment.

To ensure the safety of all our patients we have closed the Accident and Emergency Department as a precautionary measure.

The substance is currently being analysed and we will provide an update as soon as we have more information.

The A & E department is currently closed and we will release further details and information when we are able to do so.

Meanwhile, we would urge patients not to self-refer to the Queen’s Hospital A & E department as they will not be admitted. The minor injuries units at both Sir Robert Peel and Samuel Johnson community hospitals remain open and able to offer assistance to members of the public who have sustained deep cuts, broken bones, severe sprains, minor burns and scalds, minor head injuries and eye injuries.
