Lorry crash shuts busy Birmingham commuter line for third time in four days

Watch the aftermath of the third bridge crash in four days in Erdington.

A lorry has hit a railway bridge in Birmingham, making it the third incident in four days and forcing a busy train line to shut down.

The crash forced Cross City Line services to stop running from north Birmingham to Erdington, Sutton Coldfield, and Lichfield.

The Summer Road railway bridge in Erdington has been hit twice in two hours today (7 January).

A lorry hit the bridge at around 10:00am and, just two and a half hours later, the railway firm confirmed that the bridge had been hit again.

It comes just days after a similar crash on Friday (3 January).

The same bridge was also hit two months ago by a lorry driver who was later charged with drink-driving.

West Midlands Railway posted on X: “A SECOND bridge collision at Erdington. The Cross City north is again blocked.

"Ticket acceptance with National Express West Midlands has been requested.”The bus firm said it had diverted its 28 and 96 services as Gravelly Lane which joins Summer Road, was shut. It said:

“Gravelly Lane Erdington is currently closed. Bus numbers 28 and 96 diverted in both directions via Station Road. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
