People are still being encouraged to plan their journeys as a multi-million pound project to improve a major route in Nottingham city centre nears completion.

The £9 million project will introduce a new "T" Junction which will replace the Maid Marian Islands connecting Maid Marian Way with Derby Road, Tollhouse Hill and Upper Parliament Street.

The project started in May 2024 and is expected to be completed in spring 2025.

The work takes place in the following areas:

  • Main Marian Way west - where there will be lane closures

  • Tollhouse Hill - the Y7 bus stop will be suspended for up to 10 weeks, so people are advised to use the Y5 bus stop instead

Why are the changes being made?

Nottingham City Council has received funding from the government's "Future High Street Fund" for a scheme that will improve connectivity within the city centre by changing the highway layout.

Transport Nottingham says the existing roundabout layout is challenging for pedestrians and cyclists, acting as a barrier to movement between the city centre, Derby Road and the theatre/Castle area to the west of Maid Marian Way.

What will the changes mean?

  • The roundabout will be replaced with a traffic light-controlled "T" junction which will include pedestrian crossing points, while including cycle facilities

  • The current green space will be replaced with areas of planting. 41 large native trees – almost four times as many as are being removed – will be replanted in the area.

  • The junction of Mount Street and Maid Marian Way will be altered to make it simpler for people to cross the road

  • A new left turn will be opened on Park Row to allow traffic to head north onto Maid Marian Way for routes heading north and east

  • A rain garden will be added, which will help to manage rainwater

Transport Nottingham says it will be beneficial for the environment, pedestrians and cyclists.
