Derby boxer Sandy Ryan says police involved after attack in New York

Derby boxer Sandy Ryan had red paint thrown at her before a fight in New York.

Sandy, who was the first woman to be honoured with the Freedom of Derby title, was competing in the United States to defend her world title.

After the paint incident, the 31-year-old went on to fight Mikaela Mayer, but she lost the WBO welterweight world title.

The fight took place at Madison Square Garden in New York at 11pm on Friday, September 27, which was around 4am UK time on Saturday, September 28.

It is understood that the paint incident is now being investigated by the New York Police Department.

Sandy said: "Still trying to come to terms with what happened last night.

"I know I shouldn't have fought after I was attacked leaving my hotel room but I couldn't let them win like that. I was fighting off empty and still felt I won the fight.

"We have obtained the CCTV and are in contact with the NYPD."
