Two people rescued from huge fire in block of flats in Walsall

Two people have been rescued from a large fire in a block of flats in Walsall.

It comes as locals have been warned to avoid the area while at least 45 firefighters tackle the fire.

Meanwhile, a road in Walsall from Portland Street and John Street remains closed as eight fire crews deal with the incident.

Emergency services said the two people who were rescued have been taken to Walsall Manor Hospital for further treatment.

West Midland Fire Service added that everyone else that could have been in the building is safe and accounted for.

West Midlands Fire Service posted on social media, saying: "We currently have a number of crews dealing with an incident on Stafford Street Walsall.

"Our first crews were in attendance in under 5 minutes. Please avoid the area. If you work or live nearby please close your windows and doors as a precaution."

A spokesperson for Walsall Council added: "Road closure: Due to a fire, Stafford Street is closed from Portland Street to John Street. Please avoid the area."
