Rambo knife teen threatened bus driver 'fam, stop the bus' after missing stop
A teenager threatened a bus driver with a Rambo knife after missing his stop.
Hushaym Nesbeth got on the no. 23 in Quinton and without paying pushed past an elderly couple to go upstairs.Minutes later he came down demanding the driver halt the bus only for him to refuse saying he should have indicated earlier.
At that point the then 19-year-old 'threw a tantrum' and pulled out a Rambo-style knife which he repeatedly banged on the driver's door and poked through the change slot.CCTV of the incident shown to Birmingham Crown Court captured Nesbeth say 'fam' stop the ******* bus, on my mum's life stop the ******* bus bruv'.
He eventually fled, but four months after the terrifying incident he was arrested for having another knife in a restaurant.Nesbeth, now 20, of Bomers Lane in Rednal, admitted making threats with a knife and possession of a knife.
But he was spared detention on Tuesday, August 6, as he was handed a 20-month suspended sentence instead.
He was also made the subject of a Serious Violence Reduction Order meaning the police can search him for a knife without having any other cause. The incident on the no. 23, which runs between the city centre and Bartley Green, took place on November 3 last year after Nesbeth boarded in Clapgate Lane.
Prosecutor Shehraz Hussain said: "The bus driver described his demeanor as storming past an elderly couple and proceeding to the top floor."After four to five minutes he came back to the bottom floor next to the driver's cab and told the driver to stop the bus because he wanted to alight at the previous stop.
"The driver stated if he wanted to get off he needed to have indicated earlier."He continued: "As a response the defendant became increasingly aggressive, banging on the door saying 'On my mum's life stop the ******* bus'.
"He brandished a large combat-style hunter's knife. Using the knife he struck the driver's door multiple times aggressively shouting 'what are you on fam?' and 'am I ******** bruv?'.
"He attempted to push the knife through the gap in the door."The bus driver ultimately pulled over, but Nesbeth refused to leave and said 'hop out of the bus'. He only fled when the safety alarm was triggered.
In a statement the driver admitted he was scared by the incident and said: "I was confused what I had done wrong to deserve this aggressive, violent behaviour from a male I had never met before."Nesbeth was arrested on March 3 this year at around 4.37am when a member of the public alerted officers to him 'showing off' with a knife in a city restaurant.
When police confronted him, he denied having anything on him but they found a lock knife in his rear pocket.Nesbeth admitted in his interview he was drunk at the time of the bus incident.
Georgina Ellis, defending, said: "His reason for having a knife is sadly not uncommon."It was for self defence. There was no suggestion of an imminent attack but he perhaps does have more reason to be fearful than most."At the time he was homeless, sofa-surfing or staying in hostels.
"He found himself frequently around older men, including members of gangs. He was stabbed in the head at the age of 16."She told the court Nesbeth regretted his actions.
The barrister added he had been assessed as being immature, highly suggestive to negative influences with a 'markedly low IQ'.Nesbeth was ordered to carry out 30 days rehabilitation activity and 150 hours of unpaid work as part of his sentence.
Recorder Tom Walkling stated the defendant 'threw a tantrum' at the bus driver for whom it would have been a 'terrifying experience'.But he added: "I'm just pursuaded in your case you ought to be given a final chance.
"Sending you to prison for 20 months I'm concerned about how much could be achieved given how over-filled prisons and young offenders institutes are.
"I'm worried about the impact the environment would have on the people you associate with and the rest of your life. I'm going to give you a final chance."
