Dog 'left to suffer' in 'appalling' condition at Leicester park put to sleep

A dog in an "appalling" condition was found dumped in a park.

Animal charity the RSPCA said the severely ill female 10-year-old Shar Pei dog, called Shyla, was found in a bush in Rally Park, behind Tudor Road, on Thursday 21 September. She was thin, struggling to walk and had a large burst abscess on her neck, as well as ingrown nails and a large tumour on her tongue.

Shyla was rushed to a vet for treatment but her condition was deemed too extreme, and she was put her to sleep to prevent her suffering, the charity said. RSPCA inspector Karl Marston, who is investigating the incident, said: "Poor Shyla was in an incredibly awful state."

He adds: "It’s heartbreaking to think that someone had left her like this for so long to suffer - and then just dumped her in a park scared and alone."Her condition was appalling; she had an awful tumour in her mouth, a burst abscess on her neck and her ingrown nails were so long they were curling back and coming through the top of her paw.

"While sadly nothing more could be done to save her, I am determined to find the person responsible for allowing her to suffer in this state and I am appealing to the public for help.

"Shyla was found in Rally Park, Leicester at around 18.45pm on September 21. We are very grateful to the member of the public who found her and kept her safe overnight.

"Someone must know who owned her - or recognises her and I would urge anyone with information no matter how small to contact me in confidence on the RSPCA inspector appeal line - 0300 123 8018 quoting incident 01157251."
