In 1948, the NHS was born as the country tried to rebuild after the Second World War.

The idea was simple, to provide free healthcare to everyone from the cradle to the grave.

Innovation flourished in the health service, and many of the advances were pioneered in our region.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS, ITV News Central presented a special programme live from the construction site of the new Midlands Metropolitan Hospital in Smethwick near Birmingham.
