Man arrested as boy, 12, killed in Coventry Road bike crash

A 32-year-old man has been arrested after a 12-year-old boy died in a crash on a dual carriageway in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police arrived at Coventry Road at the junction with Berkeley Road shortly after 6.15pm last night.

The child was riding a pedal bike before being struck by the vehicle.

Police are appealing for eye-witnesses as an investigation into the boy's death begins.

Despite the best efforts from the ambulance service the child died at the scene, police said.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said: "We are supporting his family with specially trained officers as they try to come to terms with what has happened."

"A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and being unfit through drugs and remains in custody."

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are appealing for witnesses and in particular for people with dash cam footage to please contact us.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy and we are doing all we can to support them at this very difficult time."
