A couple who had been asked to "tone down" their Halloween decorations after a complaint to police were amazed as people travelled from far to visit them.Jo Flower and her husband Rob transformed their Rothley home into a haunted house as part of an annual tradition, but police turned up not too long after asking them to take it down.

The decorations were part of the couple's fundraising efforts for Cancer Research.

After the couple's story was shared widely on social media, flurries of families gathered to see their house on Halloween. "It has just gone mad," Ms Flower said, before adding: "We had to go to the shop twice to fill up on sweets."

The 37-year-old added: "People were coming from the other side of Leicestershire and not just to see it but to come and talk to us about what we were doing which was lovely."The couple has now received more than £600 in donations, surpassing their initial £200 goal.

Ms Flower said: "So really, the person who made the complaint has actually helped us to get more donations."

She decided to turn the tradition into a fundraising opportunity after losing her mum to cancer in 2018.

She also underwent a hysterectomy earlier this month after being told by doctors she had precancerous cells in her uterus.Looking forward to Christmas, Ms Flower and her husband plan to decorate once again for the festive season, hoping to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support charity.Ms Flower will join others in the village decorating their homes as part of the Rothley Holiday Trail, a community initiative.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said they had attended after a member of the public raised concerns with them on Thursday.

She added: "From those inquiries it was established that the display was for charity and it was agreed that the display would be taken down after the weekend to avoid any further upset."
