Derbyshire Police arrest serving officer as pedestrian dies in crash involving unmarked police car
A serving police officer has been arrested and suspended after a pedestrian died in a crash involving an unmarked police car, Derbyshire Police has confirmed.
The force said the officer has been suspended from duties while investigations continue, and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is investigating the circumstances.
Derbyshire Police had previously confirmed a 50-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and had subsequently been released on bail pending further enquiries.
A spokesperson for the IOPC said: "An independent investigation is being carried out by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after we received a referral from Derbyshire police following a fatal road traffic collision."
"A 50-year-old man sadly died and our thoughts are with his family. Our investigation is still at an early stage," the spokesperson added.
James Bane, a 50-year-old man from Nottingham, was killed after being involved in the incident just after midday on Tuesday 28th September, in the village of Etwall.
Mr Bane, a pedestrian, suffered fatal injuries in the crash which involved a Peugeot 208 and two parked cars.
A 34-year-old female pedestrian was also injured in the crash.
The crash prompted a heavy presence from the emergency services with several ambulances and a large number of police vehicles attending the scene. The road was closed for several hours.
A spokesperson for Derbyshire police said: "We can confirm that a serving police officer has been arrested in connection with a fatal collision in Etwall on Tuesday 28 September."
The force has previously put an appeal out for witnesses to come forward following the incident.
In a statement released on Saturday, October 2, it said: "We would like to hear from anyone who might have driven along Egginton Road, Etwall between the hours of 8.50am and 12pm that may have dash cam footage.
"Anyone who is able to help is asked to contact us quoting reference number 441 of September 28."
