Man in court charged with murdering his mother and step-father

A man has appeared in court after being charged with murdering his mother and step-father at their home in Oldbury.

25-year-old Anmol Chana appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday (May 15) via videolink from prison.

Mr Chana from Hamilton Road in Smethwick was accused of killing Jasbir Kaur, 52, and her husband Rupinder Singh Bassan, 51.

The couple were found dead with stab injuries by police who entered their home in Moat Road at 4am on February 25.

The hearing on Friday only lasted 15 minutes as the case could not progress because of difficulties in arranging for a defence expert to speak to Chana, due to the current lockdown restrictions at the jail.

Judge Paul Farrer QC remanded Chana back into custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on June 5, for a new plea hearing.

A two-week trial date for August 10 has already been set.
