Huge queues of cars as tips reopen after lockdown

There were huge queues at tips across Birmingham today as theyreopened following weeks of Government lockdown.

Four of the five sites are open from today (Thursday).

The tips didn't open until 11am but huge queues were forming as early as 8.30am as motorists were eager to get rid of weeks of unwanted rubbish.

This was the scene outside King's Norton's Lifford Lane tip earlier today (7th May).

The tips which are open in the city:

  • King's Norton - Lifford Lane

  • Perry Barr - Holford Drive

  • Sutton Coldfield - Norris Way

  • Tyseley - James Road

The city council and Veolia have strict rules in place:

  • Do not visit unless absolutely essential

  • Anyone in self-isolation or with COVID-19 symptoms must NOT visit under any circumstances

  • The number of vehicles on-site will be restricted and cars should be driver-only where possible

  • Cleaning will be taking place throughout the day

  • Vans and trailers will not be permitted at any site and only one person should be in each vehicle going to any of the tips

  • Usual ID is needed

  • Staff cannot help with lifting waste

Aerial footage shows queues of cars waiting outside the Sutton Coldfield recycling site.

The household recycling centre at Castle Bromwich will remain closed until further notice due to road works outside the entrance to the site.

Meanwhile, Worcestershire County Council says it will open a number of sites on Monday (11th May):

  • Bromsgrove - Quantry Lane

  • Pershore - Hill and Moor

  • Stourport - Bonemill

  • Worcester - Bilford Road

  • Malvern - Newlands

  • Redditch - Crossgates

  • Tenbury

Leicestershire County Council says it will open seven sites starting from Monday 18th May.

The county sites opening are:

  • Barwell

  • Lount

  • Market Harborough

  • Melton Mowbray

  • Mountsorrel

  • Oadby

  • Whetstone

The sites will be open to county residents only.

And, Herefordshire Council says it will reopen Hereford and Leominster centres from Saturday 9th May.

While Sandwell Council will be reopening the tip in Shidas Lane, Oldbury, from Monday 11th May.

Leicester City Council will open its Gypsum Close site from Wednesday 20th May.
