Digital light festival comes to Leicester

An international light festival has arrived in Leicester for the first time.

‘Light Up Leicester’ will offer seven traditional light displays as well as interactive installations across the city centre area from today (March 5) until Sunday (March 8).

The festival is made unique by its use of digital interactivity - people will be able to interact with the installations through sound or sensors, by reacting to light and responding to different temperature or humidity levels.

The festival will include:

  • ‘Shoefiti’ – a display of dangling LED trainers on Silver Street

  • ‘Wave’ - which will include 500 colourful lights and the voices of 500 people

  • ‘Youth Culture’ - a 3-metre high interactive sculpture, which can be found in Orton Square

  • ‘Shadowdance’ - This installation will transform people’s shadows into large, colourful silhouettes - it can be found in Green Dragon Square.

  • ‘Wave-Field’ - made up of eight seesaws which will activate when people play on them - you can find this display at Humberstone Gate

There are several other pop-up installations in the area, four of which have been seen elsewhere in the UK, but three of which have been specifically made for the ‘Light up Leicester’ festival.

The event is free of charge and will run until Sunday 8th March.
