New speed cameras in place on the A52

Average speed cameras have today (February 28th) come into operation on a stretch of the A52 between Spondon and Derby.

The speed limit will remain at 40mph while the £42 million road improvement works take place.

When the roadworks are completed later in the summer, the speed limit will be permanently 50mph both ways on the stretch from Pentagon Island to Spondon.

This is to bring the road speed into line with that already on Raynesway.

So far, cameras have been placed on the eastbound carriageway to Nottingham just after the slip road off the Pentagon Island onto the A52, after the slip road coming back onto the A52 from the Wyvern Centre, and around the slip road off to Spondon, under the Raynesway flyover.

Work to install speed limit signs and average speed cameras started on Tuesday and are expected to be completed by the end of spring.

The poor road safety record on the A52 has led to the average speed cameras being installed.

107 collisions on the A52 between the county boundary and Pentagon Island during 2013 to 2018 resulted in 162 casualties, two of them were fatal.

Highways England controls the A52 east of the Raynesway junction and beyond the city boundary and has recognised the road safety problems along the route.

To address these concerns, a reduction in the speed limit to 50mph through possibly to at least Borrowash is being considered.
