Former Derby County manager Jim Smith dies aged 79

Former Derby County manager Jim Smith has died at the age of 79.

He was in charge of the club between 1995 and 2001, gaining promotion to the Premier League in 1996.

The Rams spent five seasons in the Premier League will Smith at the helm.

His playing career lasted 14 years including a spell at Lincoln City.

Although he spent most of his time as a player in the lower leagues, it was as a manager where he really flourished.

He was a manager for 35 years and had also had success with Birmingham City. Despite suffering relegation in his first season in charge, he rebuilt the team to gain promotion the following season.
