Footballers show solidarity for Benik Afobe following the death of his daughter

The football world are expressing support and solidarity for Stoke City striker Benik Afobe following the tragic death of his daughter.

Afobe, who is currently on loan to Bristol City, released a statement on Sunday saying his family were "devastated and heartbroken" after their two-year-old girl died on Friday following an infection.

Various football teams are now expressing their heartfelt support and solidarity for Afobe and his family.

During their win against Everton, Leicester City midfielder James Maddison revealed a message under his shirt which read "Benik we're all here for you bro".

Maddison then took to Twitter to further show his support. He said "no words or messages on my shirt will ever be enough but just want you to know Me, Leicester city and the footballing world are here for you and your family".

Wolverhampton Wanderers also expressed support for Afobe, who left their team after signing for Stoke City in June 2018.

The players wore black arm bands as a sign of respect for Afobe during their match against Sheffield United. Matt Doherty took his off and kissed it and held it to the sky as he scored to make a 1-1 draw at Molinuex.

Stoke City gave their statement of support on social media yesterday (Sunday 1 December) and a more substantial tribute is expected to follow.

Afobe is contracted to return to Stoke at the end of this season.
