A man who found a knife outside his home in Braunstone, Leicestershire, claims a police officer told him to 'just put it in the bin'.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, found the kitchen knife with a blade measuring between four and six inches on Saturday morning.

His initial thought was that the knife could have been involved in a 20-person street fight that broke out nearby the evening before.

The weapon was not covered or protected and was found near the steps to the resident's block of flats on Blackmore Drive.

But after reporting it to a police officer in the area he was stunned at the response.

Leicestershire Police could not confirm what was said to the resident that flagged the police car down.

The resident says he didn't want to put the knife in the bin as he believes it would be unfair on the workers who collect the bins.

Police officers are now in contact with the man to make sure the knife is disposed of safely.
