UK's largest outdoor vegan festival comes to the Midlands
The UK's largest outdoor vegan festival is taking place in Nottinghamshire this weekend.
Vegan Camp-Out, at Newark Showground, is said to be the largest of its kind in the world and has seen huge acts and speakers attend in the past.
It's been running since 2016 when it started out with just 400 vegans in a field with one food vendor. But, last year, almost 5,000 attend from over 30 different countries.
What is Veganism?
According to the Vegan Society, Veganism is "a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."
This means that all vegans have a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish and insects), dairy, eggs and honey- as well as avoiding all products that are made from or tested on animals.
Why isn't Vegetarianism enough?
The production of some dairy products can the death of animals. The Vegan Society says countless male calves, that are of no use to dairy farmers, are slaughtered. It also says cows are killed when their milk production decreases. As a result, vegans believe that it is unethical to eat animal produce as well as animals themselves.
